## Description

Daniel Leavitt, a Devril engineer at Mysten Labs, introduces Walrus, a decentralized storage network built to address the shortcomings of current blockchain and Web3 solutions, such as centralized frontend hosting and NFT metadata storage. Walrus leverages a novel encoding algorithm for cost-effective, scalable, and reliable data storage with a low replication factor, outperforming traditional decentralized networks.

It uses the Sui blockchain for coordination, enabling programmable, composable storage solutions and tokenized storage capacity. Walrus is chain-agnostic, with public-by-default data, and supports integrations via TypeScript SDKs, HTTP APIs, and S3-compatible APIs. The workshop highlights developer tooling, cross-chain support, and app-building opportunities, including Walrus Sites for decentralized frontend hosting. Daniel discusses hackathon tracks, resources, and answers questions about cost, data sovereignty, and use cases, emphasizing Walrus’s strengths in censorship resistance and data ownership.
