## Description

PYUSD is PayPal’s U.S. dollar–backed stablecoin, fully reserved 1:1 in USD deposits or T-bills and issued by Paxos under NYDFS regulation. Subramaniam explains that after PayPal’s 2020 entry into crypto (buy/sell/hold, checkout, and transfers on PayPal & Venmo), the company saw volatility make BTC and ETH unsuitable for commerce—so it launched PayPal USD (PYUSD) in August 2023. PYUSD now supports cross-border settlements (Xoom), B2B payouts (Hyperwallet), and 4 % rewards for holders inside PayPal. The token is multi-chain—on Ethereum, Solana, Arbitrum, and Stellar—and fully programmable with AML monitoring.

He contextualizes PYUSD within Asia’s fintech evolution (from ATMs to UPI) and crypto’s timeline (Bitcoin → Ethereum → stablecoins), stressing that PayPal aims to merge traditional trade and DeFi rather than create a parallel economy. Builders are invited to experiment with financial inclusion, global money movement, tokenized settlements, and new consumer experiences. PayPal’s goal is adoption and community feedback, aided by a PayPal Stable Club, on-site support booth, and Google Cloud faucets providing 100 PYUSD test tokens on Ethereum and Solana.
