## Transcript

And yeah, this is our April edition of the Berlin Ethereum Meetup. We started restarted relaunched this meetups last year and have been meeting here every month. Um Thank you for showing up. I know the weather is really really good outside. It's before the holidays, so it's it's really appreciated that you're here and hopefully you can connect with others and learn something new. Um So yeah, today we have a short agenda so you also have some time in the end to network and connect with others. Um I will talk a little bit about some community updates as always and we have Dirk this time as our guest speaker. He will be talking about how to build a truly trustless Ethereum wallet for Android. Which is I think it's a hot topic so hopefully it will be um educational for all of you. Um yeah, and then in the end feel free to just mingle. We can stick around until like 9:00 p.m. So this time we will have a little bit more time so um hopefully um that will give you enough time to talk to everyone. Also, it's not too challenging today to be honest. [laughter] Hopefully there will be more people. Um okay, so I always like to mention this that you also have community hub at the Berlin office here. Um and the Berlin Ethereum Foundation office where we host these weekly co-working Wednesdays. Most of you have probably already been participating these sessions in the past. So we have co-working from 10:00 to 6:00 p.m. And from 6:00 to 8:00 we just stick around, hang out, and have some drinks and conversations and connect with each other. Um just some pictures of the vibes. Maybe you can spot yourselves on them. Good weather is coming again so we can hopefully have some barbecues always here so we need to fix up the barbecue station. And if you're interested in monthly memberships, we still have a few spots left so just let me know and come to chat with me in the end. Yeah, and then the Berlin Blockchain Week is approaching in June. There will be probably more events than this. This was this were the very early um confirmed events from last year but they're they're more empty than I'm sure by now. This is the calendar and the QR code so feel free to check it out. And we also will have an Ethereum day on June 15th so mark your calendars. There will be more announcements. It it will be free to attend. Um so there will be registration but no need to buy a ticket. Just mark your calendars and and make sure to stay tuned for more updates on this. Um yeah, I also always like to mention Devcon. Um I usually highlight events that are happening in the region to attend because of you know carbon footprint and other consider budget considerations but I think Devcon is the one event that most of the people from the ecosystem are always participating so it's a great opportunity to meet and connect with the ecosystem and and learn. So this year it will be in India in Mumbai in November so make sure there was an article published on the blog with a bunch of opportunities updates about Devcon so you can scan that QR. Okay, and last time I already mentioned a little bit of of the values that Ethereum Foundation wanted to highlight and re-emphasize in the mandate that um uh it was published recently. Um and we will go through a couple of items in this coming meetups. I was thinking that we can go through one by one. I think most of you who are here at this meetups are aware of these things. This is why we are here, but I think it's always good to just kind of go through them very quickly on a high level what these values mean. So, the acronym is like crops. You probably by now have heard about this. It includes censorship resistance, open source, privacy and security. So, these are the values that the Ethereum Foundation really cherishes and we really don't want to sacrifice on these values. Um And this obviously mostly uh like means the core protocol, right? But this is also these are the values that we are trying to emphasize within the ecosystem as well. Um so, yeah. Let's talk about censorship resistance today. That's also related to the next talk as well. So, that's why I thought this is a a good way to start, good place to start. So, what does it mean really? So, it means that no single actor can prevent you from access the network, send transactions to anyone, receive transactions, build applications on Ethereum, and also participate um in Ethereum without basically any permission in any way. So, this allows Ethereum to remain open to all, right? So, uh neutral, permissionless, and openness also means like it's globally accessible, right? So, from every part of the world, no matter who you are, no matter where you're trying to use Ethereum, you can always use it. Um So, why is it so important? So, we also talked about freedom last time. A lot of you mentioned a lot of different things what freedom really means to you. And yeah, so this allows freedom and self-sovereignty, which is very important and I think very underrated. A lot of people talk about it. A lot of people are trying to achieve it, but you know, with this with this modern um technical world in Web 2, it's it's it's not really didn't really materialize, unfortunately. Um So, yeah, basically it allows all living individuals and also communities to coordinate freely on a global scale, right? That's very important, like coordination. Um It's an infrastructure that allows global coordination. Um without the need of trusting each other, right? Um Also maintain ownership over your assets, your identity, um and privately often, right? We'll also talk about privacy. And access infrastructure without any centralized approval. It also maintains credible right? So, Ethereum um is aiming to serve as this public global infrastructure that does not favor any specific actors or projects. It remains accessible globally, as I mentioned already. Um and it resists any centralized control that would influence it or or try to favor any um player or any project. So, it's a credible neutral platform for open global coordination. Um yeah, and why does it matter for the ecosystem? Um I think this is also the reason why the mandate was published, right? So, it prevents mission drift in the long term. This was written not just for today, not just for tomorrow, but for the long term. Um often times, there are a lot of conflicting incentives. There are a lot of different um approaches how to do things, how to do business, um and economics and all these different kind of things, technology, right? Especially with AI. So, without a strong alignment, there can be a lot of influence in the ecosystem. Um again, I mentioned incentives, conflicting incentives, values that are diluted over time. And also short-term interests that can outweigh long-term resilience. So, it's very important to remember these. Um so, the mandate was also published to have like a true be like a true north, right? So, the mandate reinforces that censorship resistance must not be compromised for convenience, for short-term gains. Um it's one of the foundational um core values of Ethereum and it has to be part of its long-term uh road map and it also guides the ecosystem um in coordination and stewardship. Yeah, so again, long-term um censorship resistance allows open innovation, global participation. Um it's a freedom-preserving technology and it's trustworthy. Um everyone in the world can rely on this um without having uh to trust or rely on any centralized entity or government or any kind of organization. Um yeah, so Ethereum can continue um to serve humanity on the long term in this journey. And I had this slide last time. I really like this new like framing for the word computer. The word computer was, you know, there was it was explained in many different ways. I really like this new approach. So, it enables self-sovereignty. Um it's also humanity's computational substrate that anyone can interact with trustlessly, permissionlessly, and persistently, right? For the long term again. Um yeah, and that was just a quick high-level run-through of censorship resistance. And again, I'm really glad that um Derek will talk about more um about this uh wallet idea. Um so, if you want to read more, um uh here is the Ethereum Foundation's blog. Uh there are a lot of articles including the the mandate and a lot of other updates. So, um it's worth checking in every once in a while. Also, you can follow um the Ethereum Foundation on Twitter. These uh materials are also published there. If you're looking for jobs, there are plenty um in the ecosystem. This is from ethereum.org, but there are so many uh job sites on this uh website. So, if you're interested in getting involved, um here you go. And then, the recordings from these meetups are uploaded to our YouTube channel. Um so, you can also watch them later or send it to your friends. Yeah, and we also have Twitter. Um so, you can also follow us for updates. And that was my part, and thank you so much for being here. >> [applause]
