Speaker: Auryn Macmillan of Colony

Abstract: Turn your hack into a sustainable project with Colony! At ETHDenver you'll spend ~48 hours pouring your blood, sweat, and tears into something novel, something cool, something you want to see in the world. But what happens to your team and your hack when once the event is over? If you're like most hackathon participants, probably nothing.
The majority of hackathon projects never make the transition to becoming sustainable organizations.

Colony is an application for organizing and incentivizing groups of people; teams, projects communities, DAOs, etc. One particularly interesting use-case is bootstrapping participation in, and contributions to, projects with uncertain future funding; often young and/or experimental projects, like those born at hackathons. By adopting a colony, these projects can create an incentive structure that ensures contributors will earn a fair share of future funds relative to other contributors, without having funding upfront.

This workshop will start with a short case study of an open source, ethereum-based, project that started at a hachathon and is now using colony to coordinate work and distribute incentives. Then we'll dive into some of the projects that workshop participants are working on and explore how Colony's incentive structure could be applied to their use-cases. Finally, if we have time, we'll create some colonies for any projects that want to give it a try.

This talk was recorded Friday, February 14, 2020.

ETHDenver 2020’s content themes included DeFi; DAOs and Token Engineering (TE); Gaming and Usability; Protocols and Interoperability; and Public Good and Social Impact.

Industry experts also weighed in on topics like decentralization, privacy, identity, non-fungible tokens, scaling, governance, diversity, and arts and culture in blockchain technology.

The 2020 event was February 14-16 in Denver, Colorado and hosted 2000+ blockchain enthusiasts, developers and community members from 50 countries and 50 U.S. states.
