Oblivious RAM for Programmable Cryptography and Ethereum

Are we done with cryptography? Does obfuscation solve everything? The answer is no—there are still several important problems to solve to put together the full “programmable cryptography computer.” A key limitation, even with advanced primitives like FHE or iO, is that we can only run circuits, not programs—think about a computer that has no notion of RAM or disk storage. How do we introduce memory and efficient persistent storage into the cryptographic computing system? This is what primitives like Oblivious RAM or Garbled RAM aim to solve.
