"Scaling Cryptocurrencies via Offchain Protocols" Cryptocurrencies do not scale. The community is pursuing two approaches for scaling the network which includes changing the underlying consensus/blockchain protocol, or sharding which only requires peers to validate relevant transactions. However, while both approaches can improve the network’s throughput, it still requires all transactions to be validated by the global network to some extent and this requirement may directly harm the network’s public verifiability and its decentralisation (i.e. a home computer lacks the computational resources to verify 5,000 tps). Patrick is an Assistant Professor at King’s College London. His focus is cryptocurrencies, smart contracts, cryptography and decentralised systems. Patrick is the UK’s first PhD graduate in Cryptocurrencies and his work has recently appeared at Devcon3, Scaling Bitcoin 2017, Breaking Bitcoin 2017 and BPASE 2018 alongside numerous academic venues. Patrick has spent most of his adult life working on cryptocurrencies and his time was split across academic research and industry. Before working at the Arbitrum Foundation, he has worked on transaction delivery, layer-2 protocols, atomic swaps, consensus protocols, and applied cryptography. In a past life, he was an Assistant Professor at King’s College London and an accomplished researcher at UCL, UIUC and NCL.
