Stani Kulechov I Web3 Social and Decentralized Media | Aave I Pragma Tokyo 2023

Join Stani Kulechov, founder of Aave and Lens Protocol, for a deep-dive fireside chat at Pragma Tokyo exploring the future of Web3 social networks and decentralized media. In this session, Stani discusses why Lens was created, how Web3 primitives like identity, content ownership, and monetization are being redefined, and what it means to build open, censorship-resistant social infrastructure. Discover how Lens enables creators to monetize their content through “collects,” supports composability with NFTs and DAOs, and unlocks new forms of governance, user agency, and distribution. Stani shares valuable insights on content supply chains, protocol design, trust and safety in decentralized systems, and what it takes to build the next wave of consumer applications. Whether you're a builder, founder, creator, or curious user, this talk offers a clear vision for Web3 social, along with actionable advice on building in an open and modular ecosystem. 00:00 Intro to Stani Kulechov and Lens Protocol 02:07 From DeFi to Web3 social networks 03:37 Democratizing ownership in digital interactions 05:40 Is deplatforming the main problem? 08:02 Building open, composable protocols 09:15 What is Lens Protocol and its vision? 10:42 The content supply chain and collaboration 12:30 Lens as a distribution layer across Web3 13:44 Keeping the social graph constant 15:08 On-chain and off-chain primitives in Lens 17:02 Storing social data off-chain 18:10 Design decisions for accessibility and UX 19:29 Focused onboarding and curating Web3 users 21:27 New opportunities for creators and monetization 23:25 Reimagining content collection and consumption 25:07 Social behaviors, attention, and design space 28:25 Trust, moderation, and AI in social systems 30:59 Lens community building on-platform 32:18 Advice to Web3 consumer app founders 33:33 Algorithm design and open distribution 35:32 Unexpected social integrations in Web3 36:38 Are we ready for 100k+ users on-chain? 38:22 Convincing mainstream creators to try Web3 40:15 Removing friction and surfacing value 42:12 Messaging, education, and better terminology 44:37 Addressing different ontologies and perspectives 46:00 Importance of community solving big problems 47:54 Gasless transactions and long-term sustainability 50:01 Who pays gas and how value is captured 51:14 Middleware, sponsored gas, and experimentation 52:28 Closing thoughts on modularity and client diversity _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ 🇯🇵 *Pragma Tokyo* It’s always been about hackathons.
