Interoperability and the Future of Global Finance I Jon Kol

Thu, Oct 2, 2025, 12:00 AM

Jon Kol, CEO of Hyperlane, discusses the critical role of interoperability in enabling the future of global finance on blockchain. He argues that for global finance to move on-chain, solutions must be open, permissionless, and scalable, but current fragmentation across chains and virtual machines (VMs) is a major barrier. Kol highlights the inefficiency and poor user experience of bridging assets between chains, emphasizing the need for seamless connectivity. He introduces Hyperlane, an open, permissionless interoperability framework supporting multiple VMs and over 150 chains, featuring message passing, interchain accounts, and a liquidity layer to abstract away complexity. Kol illustrates how Hyperlane enables a single point of access for users and developers, citing the BitTensor/Tali integration as a real-world example. He concludes that invisible, user-friendly interoperability is essential for blockchain to meet the demands of global finance. 00:00 Introduction 00:36 The Vision: Global Finance On-Chain 01:58 Barriers to On-Chain Finance 03:20 The Proliferation of Chains and VMs 05:13 Scalability Challenges: NASDAQ vs. Blockchains 06:14 Fragmentation and Developer Complexity 08:55 The Problem with Bridging 11:24 Overcoming Fragmentation: The Hyperlane Approach 12:11 Hyperlane Architecture: Message Passing, Interchain Accounts, Liquidity Layer 14:14 Security and Modularity in Hyperlane 15:32 Interchain Accounts Explained 16:20 Liquidity Layer and Passive Provision 17:55 Hyperlane Warp Route 2.0 18:20 Real-World Example: BitTensor/Tali Integration 20:52 The Future: Invisible Interoperability 21:36 Conclusion & Call to Action _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ 🇺🇸 *Pragma New York* Pragma New York 2025 was held on August 14th at Vesper Events in Brooklyn, New York and was an in-person summit for builders and leaders in the web3 ecosystem.
