Web3 and the Gay Agenda: Why the next web will be built by queer people and our allies with Val

Ethereum DenverSat, Oct 7, 2023, 12:00 AM

The dream of the decentralized web is one where individual users have autonomy and contributors have economic opportunity. The web we have lacks both because it is built upon an economic model that is designed to erode them. Queer communities (among many others) have developed alternative social and economic models through experimentation, out of necessity, and out of deep rooted beliefs that more sustainable ways of living are possible. With these models as a foundation, a decentralized web becomes possible. This talk will focus on the architecture of technical protocols that are most aligned with the dweb that we dream of. Val S. K. Co-Founder Future Proof Val is a dweb software engineer. She is currently a core developer building infrastructure for a free and open source peer-to-peer data protocol called Ceramic, spearheaded by the startup 3Box Labs. She graduated from Cornell University with undergraduate and Masters degrees in Computing and Information Sciences. Upon joining the San Francisco blockchain community in 2017, she began developing software for crypto and web3 startups including BRD, a ConsenSys Tachyon accelerator company, and a Coinbase spinoff. She is currently a mentor for the Berkeley Blockchain Xcelerator, She256, and Gitcoin Kernel. She spends her free time educating Black and queer communities on the decentralized web.
