What does it mean to accelerate humanity? In this wide-ranging conversation at Pragma India 2023, Juan Benet (creator of IPFS and Filecoin) sits down to explore how Web3, cryptography, and incentive structures can reshape economics, governance, scientific research, and internet infrastructure. From accelerationism vs. decelerationism to rethinking capital flows, R&D, decentralized science (DeSci), and even launching crypto-powered satellites, this talk challenges us to consider how we can build a freer, safer, and more powerful world through permissionless innovation. Discover how blockchain and cryptographic tools can fund science at the scale of nation-states, enable universal basic income, create verifiable storage systems, and build a human rights–preserving internet—all without needing government approval. If you care about the intersection of technology, humanity, and the future, this conversation is a must-watch. 00:00 Introduction to Pragma and Acceleration 01:06 What is Accelerationism? 02:45 Deceleration vs. acceleration debates 04:21 Differential acceleration and risk 06:02 Areas impacted: bio, governance, energy 07:36 Where crypto fits into human progress 08:47 Incentive structures and economic design 09:44 Rethinking governance and microeconomies 10:54 UBI and global wealth distribution 12:26 Carbon markets and programmable capital 13:24 Mining incentives and unintended outcomes 14:25 Designing better incentive systems 15:41 Crypto for global scientific research 16:45 Decentralized science funding 18:15 Translational science and the “valley of death” 19:45 Reimagining VC and public goods 21:16 Impact certificates and new financial primitives 22:36 Crazy future: crypto funds more R&D than nations 24:13 A better internet and rights-preserving infra 25:26 Why the internet is a human rights issue 26:56 Threats to connectivity and freedom 28:02 Crypto-powered decentralized ISPs 29:31 Launching satellites with crypto 30:37 Crypto's power to build a better world 31:07 Final thoughts and audience thanks _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ 🇮🇳 *Pragma India* The final Pragma of the year took place in Bengaluru India in December 2023 with a curated series of high-quality talks that sparked thought and discussion.
