Panel I Practical Zero Knowledge Proof Applications | Pragma Istanbul 2023

Wed, Oct 2, 2024, 12:00 AM

Join ETHGlobal's Kartik Talwar in a high-level conversation with Sandy Peng (Scroll), Zac Williamson (Aztec), and Alex Pruden (Aleo) as they dive into the future of zero knowledge (ZK) technology. This panel from Pragma Istanbul 2023 explores the practical applications of zero knowledge proofs, from scaling solutions and privacy-preserving smart contracts to zkVMs, L1 vs L2 debates, and developer adoption challenges. Learn how Scroll is bringing Ethereum compatibility to ZK rollups, why Aztec is prioritizing hybrid private/public composability, and how Aleo is enabling decentralized private computation at L1. If you're building with ZK, interested in identity, privacy, compliance, or understanding the composable future of blockchain, this conversation is a must-watch. 00:00 Introduction and panel kickoff 01:05 First expectations vs reality in ZK development 04:25 Scroll’s mission and scalable ZK architecture 06:31 Aleo’s origin and focus on private computation 07:59 Aztec’s evolution from L1 to privacy L2 10:37 Sequencer assumptions and state models 13:14 Hybrid public/private state for ZK contracts 15:33 The role of MEV in private smart contracts 16:07 Why privacy matters for real-world users 17:26 Developers vs users in ZK adoption 19:13 Scroll’s EVM compatibility and roadmap 21:58 Why Aztec and Aleo built custom languages 24:00 Designing new execution environments 26:30 Language tradeoffs and compiler efficiency 27:00 Composability in privacy-preserving systems 30:19 Cross-network and real-world integration via ZK 32:13 Scroll apps live on mainnet 34:48 Aleo’s use cases: identity, compliance, CBDCs 37:31 Zero knowledge for digital identity and data proofs 41:17 What defines a “mainnet” launch? 44:18 Decentralization, permissionless values, and clarity 47:18 Aztec’s values and decentralization requirements 49:47 Final thoughts and close _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ 🇹🇷 *Pragma Istanbul* The sixth edition of Pragma took place in Istanbul in November 2023 with a curated series of high-quality talks that sparked thought and discussion.
