A panel that discusses issues regarding code is speech and code is law. The First Amendment to the Constitution protects code, but only to a certain extent and under certain circumstances. As the government tries to regulate crypto and web3, the issue of code is speech will be at the forefront of ensuring that government agencies do not overstep their authority and regulate constitutionally protected speech. Moreover, the concept of "code is law" mitigates certain risks that may otherwise be present in organizations and interactions not governed by code. How is the concept of code is law impacted by code as speech? This panel will discuss the interplay between the two as well. Speakers: Jeff Roberts Fortune & Marisa Coppel Policy Counsel The Blockchain Association As Policy Counsel for Blockchain Association, Marisa helps develop and advocate for policy positions on behalf of the crypto industry as well as manages long-term legal projects and strategic litigation. Prior to joining the Association, Marisa represented corporate clients in regulatory enforcement actions, internal investigations, and civil litigation matters at Covington & Burling LLP and O'Melveny & Myers. Marisa earned her B.A. from Brandeis University, her J.D. from Loyola Law School in Los Angeles, and clerked for a federal judge in the Central District of California. Other than her work at the Blockchain Association, Marisa is very involved in the SheFi community and is dedicated to helping onboard women and underrepresented groups into becoming more involved in crypto and web3. Marisa also maintains a Substack newsletter called Becoming Undefined that discusses topics related to personal development and the weirdness of being a human.
