FANG has a monopoly on aggregating and selling data products. This issue has been discussed widely, from privacy advocates to politicians but little has changed. There is a solution. In this 25 minute talk, Shiv Maik from Streamr will argue that the interests of data dignity, an open society, and financial equity, are best balanced through individuals claiming property rights over their data as part of a professionally run collective or Data Union. But data ownership is no longer an abstract ideal. Built with Web3 tech and ethics, Swash is the world's first data union. Created by developers based out of Turkey, the Swash browser extension makes it possible for individuals to aggregate their search, Facebook Twitter and Amazon data in a way that respects privacy, and then enables users to have their data sold on a decentralized data marketplace. It's therefore applications like Swash will turn the tide against the current Panopticon society we inhabit without needing to rely on statist solutions. This talk was recorded Saturday, February 15, 2020.
