Nam Chu Hoai I Open Standards' Critical Role in Protecting Ethereum Interoperability I Pragma Taipei

Thu, Oct 2, 2025, 12:00 AM

Nam Chu Hoai from Hyperlane discusses how open standards can solve Ethereum's growing fragmentation problem in this essential talk. Learn how account abstraction (ERC-4337) provides a blueprint for interoperability standards, why current bridge solutions create vendor lock-in, and how the Open Intents Framework offers a neutral approach to cross-chain communication. Discover why tooling and social consensus are critical for successful standardization, and how projects like Hyperlane are building permissionless interoperability infrastructure. This is a must-watch for developers and founders working on rollups, bridges, or multi-chain applications. 00:00 - Introduction: Ethereum's Fragmentation Challenge 01:24 - Historical Context: From ERC-20 to Rollup-Centric Scaling 03:04 - The Modern Fragmentation Problem (10+ Chains in MetaMask) 04:09 - Vision: Making Ethereum Feel Like a Single Chain Again 04:40 - Account Abstraction Case Study (Pre-ERC4337 Challenges) 05:46 - How ERC-4337 Created a Social Schelling Point 07:26 - Interoperability's "Pre-4337" Phase (Current State) 08:32 - Problems with Vendor-Locked Bridge Standards 09:40 - XC-20 Standard: Lessons in Neutrality & Tooling 11:12 - Open Intents Framework: A New Approach 12:44 - Creating Win-Win Standardization Scenarios 13:51 - Importance of Neutral Governance (EF Collaboration) 14:52 - Multi-Prover Future & Avoiding Duplicate Efforts 16:30 - Hyperlane's Kubernetes-Inspired Permissionless Model 18:03 - Real-World Implementations (Eco, Rollups-as-a-Service) 18:37 - The Coming Interoperability Renaissance _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ 🇹🇼 *Pragma Taipei* Pragma Taipei 2025 was held on April 3rd at POPOP in Taipei, Taiwan and was an in-person summit for builders and leaders in the web3 ecosystem.
