Join Jesse Pollak, creator of Base and a leader at Coinbase, as he breaks down the story behind launching Base—Coinbase’s Ethereum L2 chain—and his bold vision for the future of the onchain internet. In this fireside at Pragma Paris 2023, Jesse shares the inside story of how Base came to life, why Coinbase chose to build on the OP Stack, and how decentralization, open-source collaboration, and user-centric design will bring the next billion users onchain. Learn how Coinbase is connecting its 100M+ users to Web3, how Base plans to grow the onchain economy through better onboarding, interoperability, and developer-first infrastructure—and why Jesse believes we’re about to enter the steepest adoption curve crypto has ever seen. 00:00 Introduction and welcoming Jesse Pollak 00:49 How Base started inside Coinbase 01:55 Early failures and testnet turning point 03:27 Coinbase vs. Base: structure and autonomy 05:05 Choosing Ethereum, EVM, and OP Stack 07:16 Why many L2s need open interoperability 08:17 Open source, decentralization, and the superchain 09:49 Base’s decentralization strategy 11:21 Collaboration with Paradigm and ref/opera 12:24 Security, pessimism tool, and shared audits 13:55 Base as core contributor to OP Stack 15:23 How Coinbase plans to onboard 100M+ users 17:00 Solving UX with seamless wallet flows 18:07 Mainnet timeline and launch concerns 19:10 It’s a years-long journey, not a sprint 20:14 Jesse’s 2-year prediction: 100M+ onchain users 21:54 Why we’ve hit the inflection point now 22:31 Real crypto growth hasn’t even started yet 23:05 Closing remarks _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ 🇫🇷 *Pragma Paris* Pragma Paris took place at the Pavillion Vendome in Paris on July 20, 2023, and was an in-person summit for builders and leaders in the web3 ecosystem.
