Fireside Chat with Kartik Talwar & Austin Griffith at Pragma Prague 2025

In this fireside chat at Pragma Prague 2025, Kartik Talwar sits down with Austin Griffith from the Ethereum Foundation and Build Guild to discuss the evolution of Ethereum developer education. They explore key inflection points in Ethereum's development, the impact of Speedrun Ethereum and Scaffold-ETH, and how AI is changing developer onboarding. Griffith shares insights on curriculum design, founder support systems, and the critical "aha moments" that help developers transition from learning to building impactful products in web3. 00:00 Introduction to Austin Griffith and Build Guild 00:53 Evolution of Ethereum developer education since 2019 01:26 Inflection point at ETHNewYork 2019 01:54 Shift from infrastructure to product building 02:21 Teaching methodologies through different phases 02:52 Current focus: curriculum, tooling and hands-on education 03:24 Speedrun Ethereum adoption metrics 03:58 Tracking developer progress without compromising ethos 04:26 Impact of 3,000+ Speedrun completions 05:02 What is Speedrun Ethereum? 05:33 Teaching "web3 cron jobs" and incentive design 06:35 Game theory in smart contract development 07:22 Speedrun's project-based learning approach 07:53 Developer pipeline beyond self-guided learning 08:21 Batch programs and mentorship systems 08:50 Importance of human touchpoints in education 09:24 Common developer pain points 09:50 Knowing what to build vs. how to build 10:16 Accessibility of Ethereum development today 10:53 Teaching existing patterns vs. future innovations 11:24 Solidity learning curve assessment 11:53 The real challenge: product-market fit 12:26 Balancing founder ambitions with contributor roles 13:31 Scaffold-ETH's evolving teaching examples 14:02 From NFTs to lending protocols in curriculum 14:31 The "AMM aha moment" for developers 15:02 Understanding hyperstructures through DEX building 15:30 Democratizing access to financial primitives 15:56 Developer resource discovery challenges 16:26 AI's role in scaling developer education 16:58 Optimizing documentation for AI consumption 17:31 Trust issues with AI-generated smart contracts 18:08 Risks of AI-assisted contract deployment 18:47 Rapid prototyping on L2s with safety measures 19:20 Changing technical requirements for builders 19:56 The future of "vibe coding" in web3 20:34 Founder support as critical ecosystem need 21:02 The missing piece: post-learning guidance 21:30 Shepherding developers through the pipeline 22:01 Human touchpoints in scaling education 22:32 Ethereum as a shepherding ecosystem 23:06 Connecting developers to real opportunities 23:43 Shared founder struggles in early stages 24:10 From technical skills to product thinking _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ 🇨🇿 *Pragma Prague* Pragma Prague 2025 was held on May 29th at Holešovice Market in Prague, Czech Republic and was an in-person summit for builders and leaders in the web3 ecosystem.
