De Kai: Why Empathetic AI Is the Mother of All Commons | Intelligence at the Frontier 2026

Sat, May 2, 2026, 12:00 AM

We already lost the battle for mind control. De Kai argues it happened 20 years ago, the moment AI algorithms started deciding what ideas would and wouldn't reach us. De Kai, professor at HKUST and Berkeley's ICSI and founder of the Empathetic AI Institute, asks who decides what each of us will never know. Social media recommendations, search engines and chatbots make those decisions billions of times a day. A handful of engineers and executives set the criteria. The community has no say. AI has become the 21st century knowledge commons — the system that determines which communities form and which ideas spread. That makes it the mother of all commons, and the most urgent governance challenge humanity has faced. Speaker: De Kai (Empathetic AI Institute / The Future Society) This session was part of Intelligence at the Frontier, held March 14–15, 2026, at Frontier Tower in San Francisco.
