Adam Russell & Tom Kalil: What Do We Want AI to Do for Us? | Intelligence at the Frontier 2026

Sat, May 2, 2026, 12:00 AM

Most of the conversation around AI asks what it will do to us. Tom Kalil thinks that's the wrong question. Tom, who shaped science and technology policy across the Clinton and Obama administrations, and Adam Russell, former DARPA program director and Chief Vision Officer at USC's Information Sciences Institute, dig into what it actually takes to steer AI toward public benefit. Tom's central argument is that everyone is focused on AI itself, but not nearly enough on its complements — the data sets, benchmarks, platforms and infrastructure that determine whether AI can solve anything meaningful. AlphaFold worked because of 50 years of curated protein data. Most domains don't have that. The fireside chat covers advance market commitments as a funding model for public goods, why good ideas from the crypto and blockchain world get stuck inside that world, and what government can and can't do when technology moves faster than policy. Speakers: Adam Russell (Information Sciences Institute, USC) and Tom Kalil (Renaissance Philanthropy) This session was part of Intelligence at the Frontier, held March 14–15, 2026, at Frontier Tower in San Francisco.
