Adam Russell: It's the Institutions, Stupid | Intelligence at the Frontier 2026

Sat, May 2, 2026, 12:00 AM

Humans aren't impressive on their own. Our superpower is each other — and institutions are how we've always organized that collective intelligence at scale. Adam Russell thinks that's exactly why institutions matter so much right now, and why most of them are blowing it. Adam, a former DARPA program director and Chief Vision Officer at USC's Information Sciences Institute, comes to AI as an anthropologist. He sees two dominant responses to disruption in institutions today: pretend it isn't happening, or dig in and defend the status quo. Neither works. His argument is that real resilience means being able to change when the world changes — not holding firm while everything shifts around you. Speaker: Adam Russell (Information Sciences Institute, USC) This session was part of Intelligence at the Frontier, held March 14–15, 2026, at Frontier Tower in San Francisco.
