what is that what does it mean to be critical any definition like what does it mean to you it's related to that yeah give me that like it's about you it's very important it's one thing will break everything right and so what I wanted to do is I talked about development process last week I talked about one of the biggest things which is creating the tests or creating the tests and then actually doing the tests and in order to do the test you have to do it's called a uni and this heart is fine once again and these standards that I talked about last year last week so if you really don't like the actual definition polish it works because I'm just kind of being too easy but like actual steps up here and this is stands for you stare failure modes and effects analysis and what that is is to first law you have to like valuate the concept base three criteria which are severe difference and protection and this is all very like engineering boring stuff Chris okay so the point of this is you need to have a very critical over think very critically about your project whether an example last week we're talking about medical products and how engineers and designers and researchers will be working on the project we have to be spending significant amount of time matched doing research understand how this product could go wrong of the manufacturer on how the user can use a bone in order to make mind map and understanding of where the risk is and then that'll tell us where we should put our effort as a design team as an engineering team like this this thing is going to happen all the time as incredible severity we can detect it put all our effort into that and then if you go through issues that would be the houses machine that would be an example of you know your teeth and blood of the person have a machine clean it and put it back into you it's bigger severe when the person is sleeping and they move that the length of them come out longer sitting because we killed not a good thing so you start basically creating a big chart of all the different things it's a really boring Excel spreadsheet and you know so berries in this direction occurrences in this direction and you basically say you know here is thing one that Catholic thing to you for five and then joined up having a chart that looks a little bit like this kind of this grid and you have sort of in this cross line zone you have a point of inflection point that says this has high currents and a high severity or an attempted enough these are the things we're going to focus on here are a bunch of things that are impossible to detect but have a high severity but we can't do anything about it we can't detect it ever so you can follow this actual protocol to really understand what's happening but just understand that they're trying to systematize in sort of an not in an objective way what the risks are what you can do about it and if there isn't because if there's a risk that that's hard what we can traits or framework for you to evaluate so the question then becomes what would you what are the things that you can do once you find that there is a problem and you want to address it there's different like hierarchies of mitigations so or like and they normally start with identifying the problem first and saying you know blood the blood comes out of the patient while they sit back identify that what can we do we can either design it out you can spend like a lot of engineering and effort and to like make up perfectly just make it so that there's a new technology with blood doesn't have to leave but you know like you go oh we have the machine actually inside the body so we can move around as much as you want you know so that's the best answer but there are fundamental things we live with like you know things that you're sort of size active energy waste so we can't you know so we're not trying to design a laptop but we can maybe automate it that's pretty good so then you can make it so that you have like a intermediary step between the end user getting their blood with John the Machine in the economic sense detective sort of army and so then already can have in art and since we created a device that needs a normally closed which is essentially say like if the mechanically to be unplugged whatever it will automatically close itself because it's normally normally closed saves them the fail the failure mode is the safely so then you kind of automate it you know do things like that the next thing you can do is basically you sort of do training you say okay well or well before that you have like a supervisor right like well let's fix this problem with how a person's stand next to a person every night while they sleep and then we'll be able to like those watch not ideal then maybe you could like have it straight that's called training as that you have that supervisor training them probably these issues the next I mean probably the last thing is called lately and this is what is often the thing that companies do the most and is not actually a mitigation it's just a legal mitigation but labeling is basically don't use this you're done but that's not acceptable if you're doing certain times generally so the thing that we can do is we can sort of try and mitigate it through not exactly any of these functions but we can help to maybe reduce the severity or we can help to reduce the occurrence by doing by having a redesign we set a baseline and say with this existing technology use this thing they tend to fail X amount of time create a test and then you do a redesign and you try to replicate that and you say well I had a better design of who more intuitive and got rid of all the crap that was like all the functions that were unnecessary if they had just one lovely press that's the only one that you press they press the button it all works versus the time before we had every option the world and enough to do so then it won't look right so extreme lightbulb operation through good design which is actually a cost problem because now we were you're inherently limiting the functionality of your machine to a more streamlined but you design I guess you can do testable design it's the most important approach because what you're trying to deal with is say with product they have this certain threshold of whatever and how do we remove that or lower that professional preparer and you can address that normally through codes and well actually just codes codes are just a fancy way of grouping together different ways of communicating information between the machining person so obviously you can have a literal screen that has a coding like you know alphanumeric stuff that's one way you can but then this actually at least is the problem of multi functionality so it's not like direct because branching happen there so that kind of can be a little confusing but you can do a different color of coats to communicate which are color shape texture priority such as all artistic design things where if you design the product in a way where it's a very hierarchical flow visual information that ISM is communicated in multiple ways what it is trying to ways uses so if you have what you don't have like if you have a switchboard for you you want if this is the bucking Valley launches the missiles versus that you know these the dog 1/2 oz is distinct as possible so you want to have different colors different shapes have different actions so one thing about like well even if I'm not looking at it and I push it this way will activate it so you have a different sort of modality to changing its state so that I can rotate one person but if you can you can use good design and aesthetics and understanding human cognition will be able to create a product that would perform better and I think the last thing I would say [Music]
